Is it that serious?

Is it that serious?
I write books, read books, review books, love books…
I have been reading since age four…
There has never been a time in my life…
When I wasn’t reading at least one book…usually I am reading more…
And a magazine or two…
I love to ride the wave with my characters…
Get to know them…
Feel them…
But I have never gotten it twisted…
They are characters in a book…
I have noted lately…
I guess since becoming a writer…
And doing a gaggle of discussions about my work…
People really get caught up…
They react as though the characters in a book…
Are real people…
What is up with that?
I am so fascinated…
People will sit right next to me and tell me…
What my characters are going to do next…
What they are thinking…
Saying things like…
'I don’t like him…'
'Can’t stand her…'
And man when a character cheats…especially a woman...
Woo hooo…you can almost feel the indignation and the heat flow…
As though the character cheated on them…
There is some mad identifying going on…
Wow is all I can say…or whew…
But it is so much fun…
Just remember ya’ll…
They are just characters in a book…
Enjoy…engage…
But it just ain’t that serious…
Is it?
Love and Blessings…

LOL. I know that's right! It amazes me too. I wrote one novel where the hero had some serious issues and he was the kind of character folks either loved or hated. I wanted to take him through a journey and in the end he was redeemed by his own learning, change and actions. But girl, the people who hated this character, hated him with a passion and they couldn't see their way clear to his change. Now that's fine. To each her own. But when folks start a negative ad campaign against the book... That's just... errr... crazy. He ain't real! LOL. But I've since decided that if I can create a character that readers care enough about to make real and hate or love with such passion, I have done my job. And it sounds like you've done yours. I can't wait until my copy of your latest comes in the mail from Amazon. :-)

Sometimes when we see a little bit of a similarity with a character and ourselves, it is easier to hate on the character, than to hate on ourselves. That is trying to overlook what is the real problem. But then of course we have those that really get consumed with the character and you have to wonder where is your real life. It is good to get away from the every day stress and bury yourself in a book (believe me I do it all the time) but when you close the book it is back to reality.

As for those that are still hating on Cinnamon, they are really missing the point behind the whole story. See they are reading to be entertained only, but the moral of the story is more than they can ever handle, so it goes right over their heads. Too bad for them. I found her to be rather amazing.

I feel if a writer can bring some life into a character where he is loved or hated, then it is a dang-on good book and I want to read it.
