Grow...n

To grow we have to be open and free…
Open?
Yes open, our hearts and our minds…
Once you have closed either one…
Growth stops…
Once we consider ourselves a grown…
We will never grow again…
This is possibly one of the reasons for the generational divide…
Once we are unable to hear…
The voices of our children…
Realizing that we can learn from them…
Because we are too grown…
We miss out on so many chances…
Mentoring can be a backwards journey…
I have learned so much from the young people in my life…
A woman recently told me that I needed to choose a voice in my writing…
“You can’t use words like androgynous in a sentence and then slang in the next…”
Oh yes I can…
My heart and mind are so open…
That I can speak the Queen’s English and Ebonics, without missing a beat…
What that does is releases me…to know everyone…
To be available to people who are just like me…
Or so not like me…
Free?
Yes Free…
To be me…
And for you to be you…
To speak our minds and hearts…
To accept and embrace differences…
To coexist…
Somewhat…
Peacefully…
So many have tried to still my voice…
Alter my words…
Didn’t happen then…
Won’t happen now…
I am growing…
And will throw…
Water…
Sun…
And fertilizer on my damn self…
If no one else wants to…

I agree, yes you can! It's a bit narrow-minded for people to think that because a person has large vocabulary they won't use slang. Personally, I love language. That's why I'm a writer. The nuances of words and what I can do with them, heck just listening to or reading the way others use them, turns me on. :-) Not to mention the fact that I'm a Ph.D. who just happens to be a hip-hop head who can go from talking about false dichotomies (which that woman who critiqued you was trying to set up by the way) to the straight-up wack way some of us try to player hate (which by the way that woman was also doing). LOL. Great post, sis. Keep being free. Keep doing you.

much love and peace,

Gwyneth

That is why I write as well, I am so tired of the definitions...why cant we all be multi-dimensional, or better yet allow others to be...those who get it get...those who don't, oh my...

Love You...

I wonder if the person who told you that you needed to chose a voice, if she has stop eating new things?

You know every day something new comes out, weather it is a movie, some new music, or things to eat, and we all try them. Baby Boomers, Generation X, and whatever comes next. But if we did not continue to grow, our lives would become stagant with the same boring, thick things we have been dealing with since birth. Change and variety is all good.

I want to grow more until the day they put my cold body into the earth.

AC, you continue to be you...a flowering tree, that keeps producing new buds.

Relax and be in peace
