Easy Prey

My girls are weighing heavy on my heart this morning,
Sometimes they look in my eyes, asking, "Ms A. Why?"
Why are we so compromised, victimized, non-legitimized...
Of course I tell them how wonderful they are, how young black women are setting the world on fire,
Making things happen,
Filling up college classrooms, and boardrooms across the country,
And they are mostly happy to hear that,
But....the disenfranchised, poor girls know that in many cases they are not represented in that group I just mentioned,
It is extraordinarily difficult to look them square in the eye and say ....
Babies you are compromised, victimized and non-legitimized because to a sick world,
You Are Easy Prey...
You are living in a situation where people know you don't have much...
So they offer you small bits of nothing...
So they can take away something...
Most precious...
Predators know you are lonely and sad,
And would be mighty glad...
To feel arms around you...
Any arms...
So with slick messages...
Soft voices,
And compromised Integrity...
They wiggle into your soft, vulnerable places...
Attacking that which is sacred...
Probably not even realizing how much damage they are doing,
Because in many cases they are so damaged themselves....
That is why it is so important to say NO...
To realize that giving up that which is most valuable,
For a coke and a smile, is never worth it,
And that there is no price on what God has given you,
And if there were, no one would have enough to pay it...
It is so hard to say it, BUT SAY IT I MUST....

LOVE, PEACE AND BLESSINGS,
angelia

Thank you for saying that!!! I want to save that and share it with my girls - I was just driving to work this morning thinking about having this conversation with them and make them aware of their value. I don't remember anyone ever doing that for me or with me. But they need to know their worth and know that it comes from within, the outside world can't give it to them.

Thanks Lena,
that is my life mission, my ministry to get the word out there to young sisters what they are worth, that's what I tried to do in my latest book...

bless you!

I have conversations like these with my daughter everyday... she's fourteen and I can't afford to do anything other than...

Everything under the sun is discussed because, like you said, they are prey...ain't no half-steppin around that truth

Great post!

G-Nice,
No half stepping whatever, we have to bring it and bring it real...my job is to bring it to those when they aren't getting it from anywhere else. Thanks Boo!

I am like Lena, I don't recall have anyone tell me about my self-worth or how precious a gem I was given. But all sickos that knew who my father was, never tested how crazy he would get over his daughters. I try to do it differently with my daughter. I gave her the talk when she was eight, because when I was growing up I remember a ten old friend of mine that was having sexual relations. She thought that was the way. I wonder where she is now?

See I have bigger dreams for my children and I told my daughter straight. I hope and pray that I can block those who seem to think it is ok to take away from a child that which they can never get back. It's sad that not everyone has someone guarding them the way we are guarding our children.

Jen,
it is sad, but the even sadder truth is that often the women in the girls lives don't know enough to be able to teach their daughters because they have not been taught their value and the messages are generationally exchanged...I know of so many women who have passed on the 'Get Money' or 'Use What You Got to Get What You Want Message' not realizing what they were doing or what had been done to them...

I thought we had it hard but the young ladies of today are dealing with so much more - peer pressure is worse now than when we were teenagers. Most young ladies don't realize their worth. There's a teen pregnancy epidemic. Although I'm not a mother, I try to make young women in my family feel comfortable coming to me to talk. I might not have the answer to everything, but I can lead them in the right direction.

Thanks Shelia,
they know we don't always have the answers they simply want and need us to be available...

We are going to have quite a few conversations, you and I.

Surely you must know what these young girls are looking for. Where are the fathers!?

This was so beautiful and poignant! You should put this on a poster and it should hang in every junior high school in the country. You go, sistya!
