Books have always had the profoundest affect on my life,
Once I discovered I could read at age four,
It has been something that I have done daily,
As such I am a huge believer in giving and reading books to children,
I started reading to my boys in the womb,
And they were read to the whole of their childhoods,
And they received books of their own all the time,
Books in my house was like cookies in some homes,
Something to savor…
Nowadays,
I gift books to the little ladies in my life,
Tamia, Agia, Madison and Laylah…
And my seven month old grandbaby has a growing library,
But there are other kids as well, who arent as fortunate...
There is a gas station/store near my home and I am in there at least two days a week,
I know all the women,
Many have bought and read my books,
They call me ‘Book Lady’ cool…
Well this one woman told me point blank she didn’t read,
Gasping for air…
But that her daughter did,
Breathing again,
So I asked her age and when she said fourteen,
I drove home and got a copy of my young adult book:
Is NO Not Clear Enough For You?
Within a day she was done…
Mama asked me if I had other books,
I said ‘Oh yeah’…and that I would bring them in on Friday,
Well Friday came and went and an Aging Diva forgot…
Last night after dinner I stopped in and as soon as I saw mama I remembered,
I hurried home and scooped up all the YA books I had,
Taking them too her,
I told my husband that even if I’d had to go to Walmart and purchase,
Books I would have,
Because one thing I know for sure is that reading opens so many doors,
And changes life,
Exponentially,
Tot that I am a witness!

For us it's hard to see how people can get by without the desire to read. I'm always amazed when I run across someone who doesn't read but there are a lot of people like that. I always thinks its great that you write but say they don't have time to read or that reading is boring. I give them a strange look because boring is the last thing I would describe 90 percent of the books I read.

I'm saddened to know I live in a city with one of the lower reading rates.
As an author its very difficult.

it is sad, Jacksonville has it's share of reading issues as well, it is getting better due to some innovative programs by our new Mayor and some of us stepping up and out....it is particularly tragic in inner-city communities, because all too often there no reading mentors to image...

Baltimore was once called "the city that reads" but it had a drop out rate of 40% of all high school seniors. The drop out rate has declined, kids are buying Zane and other urban titles... some say at least they are reading. True... Now we need to focus on the content of what they are reading....
Like you I spend too much money on books and giving them away. I enjoy it and will continue to do it... :-)

I agree Angel. I just got an order from Amazon this week. A wlole slew of books, and I realized that only one of them is for me! LOL
But it's like an addiction...giving away books to young readers . . . single mothers, senior citizens... who can't afford buy their own. I just can't stop doing it especially for children and YA.
The kids at my church call me "The Book Auntie" LOL

I am a witness too! It opens your mind too... people that think there is only one way to do things or see things - usually don't pick up a book everyday to read. I was thinking, sadly, that my mother has always had books around us, but I have never in my whole life of almost 40 years, have never seen her read one. It is definitely my most favorite pastime and I never go anywhere without a book.

my mom didnt read many books either, but she bought them for us and two of my aunts, my cousin and my godmother were avid readers...so grateful for them and all the teachers and librarians who nurtured and supported my love for books. In elementary school I sat in the library for hours with Ms. Taylor, she always allowed me to take more than the max number of books home...she knew I would read them and that I would not bend the pages!
